In the fall of 2008 I was invited to be an artist-in-residence at Westminster High School in Atlanta, Georgia to develop a unit on Art and Community with Senior Art Instructor Maggie Davis and instructor Ben Steele. Throughout the six-week residency I guided the students in the conceptualization and articulation of an artistic project of their own design that would express their feelings about being inside their privileged “Buckhead Bubble”– a wealthy area in the city. The project topic itself was a product of collaboration and brainstorming about social issues of concern to the students. We practiced metaphorical thinking, constructed preliminary models to test construction feasibility, and decided to create an outdoor painted graffiti piece and performance. The students brought their own brand of graffiti to the Westminster campus with the intention of provoking a conversation about who is in and who is out of the rich-kid bubble they feel so bound by.
