PROJECT 9/11

In October and November 2001, several Atlanta artists* and I organized a performance and installation of memorial ribbons bearing the names of the victims of the September 11th tragedies. Over a month-long period, artists and friends gathered to create ripped strips of red, white and blue cotton cloth, and to write the name of one of the dead or missing on each. The act of ripping recalled the biblical expression of grief in the rending of garments. Citizens of the community of all ages performed the two-day solemn ritual of taking one ribbon, announcing the victim’s name at a microphone and then tying it onto the steel exo-structure in the Barbara L. Hanes Courtyard of the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center.

*Organizing artists were MB Andrews, Susan Cipcic, myself, Margaret Patterson, La Quita Thomson, Julie Stuart and Susie Winston.
